Science under the Sea – National Science Week Event

Jump in without getting wet and learn more about science under the sea!

As a leader in marine science education and research, Southern Cross University’s National Marine Science Centre (NMSC) aims to promote greater awareness of the marine environment and scientific processes during National Science Week. This event will be held over three days at two major shopping areas in Coffs Harbour and at Southern Cross University’s National Marine Science Centre.

“Science under the Sea” will pique interest and understanding of the marine environment through a series of ‘hands-on’ activities, displays and presentations

11:00 – 11:30 Tour – NMSC research laboratories NMSC research labs

11:30 – 12:00 Activity – “What shell is that?”- the key to identifying molluscs of the Coffs Coast. Nicola Fraser, SCU Honours student Aquarium map room

12:00 – 13:00 Lectures – Postgraduate lectures (15 minutes each)
• “Clueless about cuttlefish”: answering key questions about these curious cephalopods. Amanda Beasley – PhD student, SCU
• “Creatures of the rocky shores”: insight into the creatures that live in the intertidal zone. Nicola Fraser, Honours Student, SCU
• “The fascinating world of Sea slugs”: a look at these interesting molluscs. Matt Nimbs, Honours Student, SCU Aquarium Auditorium

14:00 – 15:00 Movie – “bag it – is your life too plastic” – This award winning 2010 documentary film exposes the effects of plastic bags and other plastic consumer merchandise on land ecosystems, the marine environment and the human body. Aquarium Auditorium

15:00 – 15:30 Presentation – “Not so fantastic plastic; marine debris and its effects on marine organisms” Mr. Stephan Soule, NMSC Aquarium Auditorium
